NKU SEEKS PERFECT GLVC RECORD

Norse (22-4 overall, 12-0 GLVC) host USI, SIUE

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University volleyball team, now 22-4 overall and 12-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, will conclude the regular season this weekend with home matches against the University of Southern Indiana (7 p.m. Friday) and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (2 p.m. Saturday).

NKU, which has won 18 consecutive matches, has clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament. NKU will play host to the GLVC Tournament Nov. 8-10 in Regents Hall.

The Norse - ranked No. 15 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll - will play at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 8 in the first round against the No. 8 seed (either Saint Joseph’s College or the University of Wisconsin-Parkside).

If NKU defeats both USI and SIUE this weekend, it will mark the second time in the past three years that the Norse have posted perfect GLVC records. NKU also finished 15-0 in the GLVC in 1999.

Bethany Gastright recorded 20 kills last Saturday as NKU defeated Lewis University, 30-28, 30-26, 30-25. Julie Hathorn added nine kills and a .533 hitting percentage.

Gastright now has 1,587 career kills, which ranks No. 3 in NKU history. She needs 27 kills this weekend to become NKU’s all-time career leader in that category. Jenny Jeremiah is currently NKU’s all-time career leader with 1,613 kills.

NKU owns a 26-5 record against USI in the all-time series, while the Norse are 11-1 all-time against SIUE. NKU has never lost (5-0) to SIUE in Regents Hall, and the Norse are 12-2 all-time against USI at home.

NKU sophomore outside hitter Cammi Welter was named GLVC Player of the Week on Monday. Welter, a graduate of McAuley High School in Cincinnati, had 25 kills and 41 digs last weekend as NKU wrapped up the GLVC Tournament’s No. 1 seed with a pair of road wins.

Welter had 16 kills, a .467 hitting percentage and 14 digs in a 3-1 win at Wisconsin-Parkside, and she added nine kills and 27 digs in a 3-0 win at Lewis. Welter averaged 12.5 kills in the two wins.
