ASALON NAMED NKU BASEBALL HEAD COACH

Former NKU baseball player to follow Aker as head coach

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University athletic director Jane Meier announced Tuesday that Todd Asalon has been selected as the school’s baseball head coach.

“We are very fortunate to get a quality baseball coach like Todd Asalon,” Meier said. “Todd is very familiar with our baseball program, and he is very respected in the local baseball community. He played at NKU and appreciates our baseball tradition, and we look forward to having Todd as our baseball coach.”

Asalon, who has spent the past six years as the head baseball coach at Thomas More College, is a 1994 graduate of NKU. Asalon played baseball for the Norse from 1980-83, and he was a three-year starter at catcher. Asalon earned All-Region honors in 1981 and served as team captain in both 1982 and ’83.

He later was an assistant baseball coach for the Norse from 1991-94, before taking the Thomas More coaching job in 1994.

“This is a great opportunity to go back and coach where I played college baseball, and it is a dream come true to coach the baseball program at Northern Kentucky University,” said Asalon, who posted a 144-92 record in six years at Thomas More.

Asalon led Thomas More to a school-record 32 victories this past season and its first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. He was named Association of Mideast Colleges Conference Coach of the Year in 1995.

In addition to being the baseball coach, Asalon also served as Thomas More’s athletic director the past two years.

Asalon inherits an NKU baseball program that posted a 27-28 overall record this past season. The Norse finished in 10th place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with an 8-19 record.

Asalon replaces Bill Aker, who retired in May after 29 seasons as the only baseball head coach in NKU history.
