Men's Soccer

NKU, Quincy play to 1-1 tie

WILDER, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University and Quincy University played to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Defense was the key for both teams as NKU junior goalie Jimmy Dwertman (17 saves) and Quincy goalie Jason Wright (9 saves) stopped potential winning goals during both overtimes. Senior Mike Combs scored NKU's goal in the first half off an assist from freshman Tony Becker. Quincy's Scott Rogles had an unassisted goal early in the first half to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

NKU is now 4-1-1 overall, 1-0-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. NKU will travel to Rensselaer, Ind., on Saturday to meet Saint Joseph's.

Ruark scores three goals as NKU defeats Quincy

WILDER, Ky. - Sophomore Tricia Ruark scored a career-high three goals and added an assist Sunday as NKU defeated Quincy, 7-0, at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Ruark scored two goals in the first half as NKU (8-0) took a 3-0 lead at intermission. She later added another goal in the second half to record her first three-goal match in college. Sophomore Amanda Trout added a goal and an assist for the Norse, now 2-0 in the GLVC. Sophomore goalie Lauren Piening recorded her fifth shutout for the Norse, and sophomore Betsy Moore added her 12th goal of the season. Moore leads the GLVC in goals scored and points scored (27 points).

NKU, ranked No. 6 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, will travel to Rensselaer, Ind., on Saturday to meet Saint Joseph's.

NKU remains unbeaten with 5-0 win at Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. - NKU remained perfect this season with a 5-0 victory at Quincy on Sunday. Sophomore Jamie O'Hara won at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to lead the Norse.

NKU is now 9-0 overall, 9-0 in the GLVC. The Norse, who have not lost to a GLVC opponent in two years, will play host to Bellarmine this Thursday afternoon at Highland Heights, Ky.

Volleyball

Jeremiah, Gastright & Buroker star in win over Quincy

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Senior outside hitter Jenny Jeremiah had 17 kills and 22 digs Saturday, and junior middle hitter Jessica Buroker and sophomore outside hitter Bethany Gastright combined for 30 kills as NKU defeated Quincy, 16-14, 15-10, 15-6 in Regents Hall.

NKU, now 12-1 and ranked No. 7 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, improved to 2-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Buroker had 14 kills in 29 attempts, and Gastright had 16 kills in 33 attempts and just one error. Buroker also had four block assists and two solo blocks.

Junior setter Bobbi Casey picked up 49 assists for NKU, and freshman defender Tara Bach served up three aces for the Norse. Bach also had 11 digs.

NKU will return to action this Tuesday night (Sept. 21) with a 7 p.m. home match against Bellarmine in Regents Hall.

 

Cross Country

NKU's Smith breaks school record with time of 19:18

WILMINGTON, Ohio - NKU junior cross country runner Tabatha Smith broke her own school record Saturday afternoon by finishing the Wilmington Invitational's five-kilometer race in a time of 19:18.

The previous record was also held by Smith, who ran a 19:38 time at the 1997 GLVC Championships. Smith posted a third-place finish in the individual race at Wilmington, and NKU posted a fourth-place finish in the team results.

In the men's race, NKU posted a third-place finish as Ryan Carskadon completed the eight-kilometer course in 27:24 (9th place). Kevin Alessandro completed the race in 27:47 (14th place), and Joe Zeinner finished 18th with a time of 27:58.

Anderson, Borg score goals to lift NKU past UMSL

WILDER, Ky. - Jeff Anderson and Eric Borg both scored goals late in the second half Saturday as NKU defeated Missouri-St. Louis, 2-1, in the GLVC opener.

NKU, now 4-1 overall, trailed 1-0 until Anderson scored at the 68:37 mark off an assist from Adam Gregory. Borg later won the match for NKU with a goal off an assist from Sam Renck with seven minutes left in regulation.

NKU will play host to Quincy at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Norse rally past UMSL with late goals

WILDER, Ky. - Kristen Noakes and Tricia Ruark both scored goals in the final 15 minutes of regulation Saturday as NKU remained unbeaten (7-0) with a 3-1 victory over Missouri-St. Louis.

NKU's Betsy Moore scored the Norse's first goal to tie the score at 1-1, and Noakes broke the tie at the 75:19 mark with a goal off an assist from Amanda Trout. Ruark sealed the NKU win with a score with less than four minutes remaining.

NKU, ranked No. 6 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, will face Quincy at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

NKU remains unbeaten with 8-1 win at SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - NKU remained perfect this season with an 8-1 victory at Southern Illinois at Edwardsville on Saturday. The Norse are now 8-0 overall, 8-0 in the GLVC.

NKU No. 1 singles player Jamie O'Hara defeated SIUE's Sarah Hardimon, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, to stay unbeaten. NKU will play at Quincy on Sunday afternoon.
