NKU DEFEATS QUINCY, 6-0

Norse advance in GLVC Tournament with victory in opener

EAST PEORIA, Ill. - Jennifer Schamp went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in Friday as the Northern Kentucky University softball team defeated Quincy University, 6-0, in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

Schamp gave NKU a 2-0 lead in the first inning when she lined a two-run single up the middle. Rachele Vogelpohl extended the Norse’s advantage to 3-0 in the second inning with a sacrifice fly that drove in Sara Becker.

Ricki Rothbauer was 2-for-4 with an RBI for NKU, which improved to 48-3. Emily Breitholle allowed just two hits and picked up the complete-game victory for the Norse, who are ranked No. 5 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll.

Breitholle, a junior from Hamilton, Ohio, upped her record to 15-1 this spring. She now owns a 48-13 career record with the Norse, who extended their win streak to 10 straight with the victory.

NKU, the No. 1 seed in the GLVC Tournament, met the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in the second round Friday. The game, however, was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the fourth inning with no score.

NKU and Wisconsin-Parkside will resume that game at 2 p.m. (eastern time) Saturday in the bottom of the fourth inning.

NKU is seeking its first GLVC Tournament championship. The winner of the GLVC Tournament will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Pairings for the NCAA Division II Tournament will be announced Monday (May. 3). If NKU maintains its No. 1 ranking in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region poll, the Norse will play host to the NCAA Tournament May 6-9.
