HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Emily Breitholle became the first 20-game winner in Northern Kentucky University softball history Sunday as the Norse defeated the University of Southern Indiana, 3-1, at the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field. Breitholle, a freshman and a graduate of Fairfield (Ohio) High School, allowed just six hits and had five strikeouts to improve to 20-3. Joanna Doerner led the NKU offense with three hits, and Amanda Davidson added two hits. In the second game, Davidsons two-run double in the fourth inning helped NKU complete the sweep with a 4-1 victory. Kyla Chaney scattered six hits and upped her record to 10-2 for the Norse, who improved to 36-9 overall, 16-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The 36 wins established a school record for victories in a season. Prior to this year, 35 wins in 1989 was the NKU single-season record. The Norse, who will be the No. 2 seed at the GLVC Tournament at Romeoville, Ill., this weekend, are ranked No. 19 nationally in the Division II poll. NKUs first-round opponent in the GLVC Tournament will be announced later this week. Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville - which NKU defeated by a 4-3 score on Saturday - is the No. 1 seed for the GLVC Tournament. The Cougars (45-9 overall, 17-2 GLVC) swept a doubleheader at the University of Indianapolis on Sunday to earn the No. 1 seed. |
