HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University softball team is now 32-8 after going 2-0 at the rain-shortened Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference/Great Lakes Valley Conference Challenge this past weekend at South Bend, Ind. NKU will return to GLVC action this week with a road doubleheader at Saint Josephs College this Thursday at 3 p.m. The Norse will then return home and close out their GLVC schedule against Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (1 p.m. Saturday) and the University of Southern Indiana (noon Sunday). If NKU wins all six games this week, the Norse will be the No. 1 seed at the GLVC Tournament May 3-5 at Romeoville, Ill. NKU is currently 12-2 in the GLVC and trails SIUE (15-1) in the race for the top seed. The Norse are also ranked No. 2 in the Great Lakes Region poll behind No. 1 SIUE. NKU needs just three wins to tie the school record for most victories (35 in 1989). The Norse are ranked No. 16 nationally in the Division II poll. Freshman pitcher Emily Breitholle improved to 17-3 on Saturday with a 1-0 win against Wayne (Mich.) State University. Breitholle, who has already established a school record for most wins in a season, owns a 1.67 earned run average and has 76 strikeouts. Freshman first baseman Angie Lindeman leads NKU in hitting with a .445 batting average. Lindeman also has a team-best 34 runs batted in and 12 doubles. Senior center fielder Joanna Doerner is batting .362 and has scored 26 runs. |
