WILDER, Ky. - Chris Thompson scored on a breakaway 15 minutes into the second half Friday as the Northern Kentucky University mens soccer team defeated the University of Southern Indiana, 1-0, at the Town & Country Sports Complex. The contest was scoreless in the second half when Thompson chased down a ball at midfield, dribbled past the Southern Indiana defense and beat Screaming Eagles goalie Kyle Penick with a shot to give NKU a 1-0 lead. It was Thompsons third goal of the season. Nate Madden picked up his eighth shutout of the season for NKU, which improved to 7-2-2 overall, 2-2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Madden also had four saves as NKU snapped a two-game losing streak. Southern Indiana had two chances to tie the match late in the second half, but both attempts missed. With 10 minutes remaining, Michael Dugger attempted a 20-yard kick that sailed high. Three minutes later, Dugger again found an opening and fired a shot from 12 yards that hit the crossbar and bounced away. Southern Indiana - which owns a 14-8-2 lead in the all-time series with NKU - dropped to 2-8-1 overall, 1-3 in the GLVC. The Screaming Eagles held an 11-4 advantage in shot attempts and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. NKU will play host to the University of Missouri-St. Louis at noon Sunday. |
