NKU TO HOST SJC, IPFW THIS WEEKEND

Norse look to qualify for upcoming GLVC Tournament

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -The Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team, now 5-10 overall after dropping a 1-0 decision at Lewis University on Sunday, will host a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference home matches this weekend at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.

The Norse will play host to Saint Joseph’s College at 6 p.m. Friday night, and close out the regular-season home schedule at 12:30 p.m. Sunday against Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne. NKU is now 4-5 in the GLVC and tied for seventh place in the conference standings with the University of Indianapolis.

The top seven teams qualify for the GLVC Tournament, with the No. 1 seed receiving a bye and the right to host the semifinals and finals. If NKU defeats both Saint Joseph’s and IPFW this weekend, the Norse will qualify for the GLVC Tournament. NKU holds the head-to-head tie-breaker with Indianapolis and would receive at least the No. 7 seed.

IPFW, which is 6-3 in the GLVC, has declared for Division I status and is ineligible for the GLVC Tournament. Saint Joseph’s is 5-4 in the GLVC.

A year ago, NKU finished eighth in the GLVC and did not qualify for the GLVC Tournament.

NKU enters this weekend having lost three consecutive GLVC matches. Prior to that, NKU had won five consecutive matches after starting the season 0-7.

NKU is led by sophomore Jeff Anderson, who has scored seven goals and added six assists. Sophomore Mohamed Janah has scored seven goals and recorded three assists.

A YEAR AGO AGAINST SJC: Kevin Crone scored two goals as NKU posted a 4-0 win against Saint Joseph’s at Rensselaer, Ind.

Goalie Justin Wesling picked up the shutout for NKU, which built a 3-0 halftime lead.

A YEAR AGO AGAINST IPFW: Chris Kramer scored a goal seven minutes into the second half as IPFW posted a 1-0 win against NKU at Fort Wayne, Ind.

Braden Butler assisted on Kramer’s goal at the 52:12 mark, and Mastodon goalie Jeff Richey recorded the shutout with four saves. IPFW outshot NKU, 21-6.
