TRUMAN STATE DEFEATS NKU, 2-0

Norse drop key regional contest

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Martin Clayes scored a goal and had an assist Sunday as the Truman State University men’s soccer team defeated Northern Kentucky University, 2-0, at the Truman Soccer Park.

Nate Gibson picked up the shutout and finished with four saves as Truman State improved to 9-3-3 with the important regional victory. The Bulldogs finished with a 14-7 edge in shot attempts and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Clayes gave Truman State a 1-0 lead at the 51:23 mark when he wrapped a corner kick into the back left post for his 10th goal of the season. With seven minutes left in the game, Brenton Freeman iced the win by heading the ball into the net off a direct kick from Clayes.

NKU, ranked 24th nationally in the the latest NCAA Division II poll, dropped to 10-3-2.

NKU will play host to Oakland City University at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Norse will close out their home schedule at noon next Saturday against Lewis University in a key Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.

NKU is currently 5-2-1 in the GLVC.
