NKU PLAYS ASHLAND THIS WEEKEND

Norse (1-1) take on Eagles (0-0-1) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team will play Ashland University at 3:30 p.m. this Saturday at Ashland, Ohio.

NKU enters that contest with a 1-1 record, while Ashland is 0-0-1. The Eagles played the University of Indianapolis to a 1-1 tie in their season opener.

NKU split two games last weekend, defeating the University of Findlay and losing to Saginaw Valley State University. The Norse’s Chris Thompson scored a pair of goals to lead NKU past Findlay, 4-2, last Saturday.

Thompson’s goals helped make NKU head coach John Basalyga a winner in his collegiate debut. Nick Rascona scored his first career goal late in the second half to seal the victory for NKU.

On Sunday, Kyle Grant’s goal at the 79:59 mark snapped a scoreless tie and keyed Saginaw Valley State’s 2-0 victory over NKU. Robert Alexander sealed the victory for the Cardinals with 39 seconds remaining by knocking in a rebound shot to give Saginaw Valley State a 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals (2-0) took a total of 18 shots, while NKU attempted 10 shots.

After meeting Ashland, NKU will return home and play host to a pair of nationally ranked teams next weekend when Truman State University and Rockhurst (Mo.) University visit the Town & Country Sports Complex.

NKU will meet Truman State at 3 p.m. Sept. 13, and the Norse will face Rockhurst at 10 a.m. Sept. 14.
