Screaming Eagles score in closing seconds for 1-0 win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Duncan Bray’s breakaway goal with less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime Sunday gave the University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over Northern Kentucky University at Strassweg Field.

The winning play began when Southern Indiana goalie Kyle Penick threw the ball down the right side to Matt Settles. Settles then passed the ball to Bray, who used two quick dribbles to beat the NKU defense.

NKU goalie Nate Madden came out of the net to challenge Bray, who chipped a shot into the net for the winning score with just 1:34 remaining in the second overtime.

Madden played 108 minutes and picked up eight saves for NKU. The NKU goalie recorded seven saves in the second half.

Southern Indiana, ranked No. 22 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, improved to 7-3 overall, 6-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Screaming Eagles are in sole possession of first place in the GLVC.

NKU dropped to 3-6-2 overall, 1-2-2 in the GLVC. The Norse are in ninth place in the GLVC standings.

NKU will play host to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville at 8 p.m. Friday at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.
