NKU LOOKS TO WRAP UP GLVC NO. 1 SEED

Norse volleyball team can clinch this weekend

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University volleyball team, now 20-4 overall, 10-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, can wrap up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament with a pair of road wins this weekend.

NKU will visit Kenosha, Wis., this Friday night at 8 p.m. to meet the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. The Norse will also travel to Romeoville, Ill., on Saturday for a 3 p.m. match against Lewis University.

NKU enters this weekend with 16 consecutive victories. The longest single-season win streak in Norse volleyball history is 27, set in 1995 when NKU won its final 27 matches of the season.

The Norse are ranked No. 17 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. NKU is ranked No. 4 in the latest NCAA II Great Lakes Region poll.

Bethany Gastright had 24 kills and a .706 hitting percentage last Saturday afternoon as NKU defeated Kentucky Wesleyan College, 30-13, 30-16, 30-9. Gastright now has 1,554 career kills, which ranks No. 4 in NKU history. Jenny Jeremiah is NKU’s all-time career leader with 1,613 kills.

Gastright also was named GLVC Player of the Week for the third time this season after averaging 24 kills and a .597 hitting percentage in a pair of wins last weekend.

NKU will return home next week to host the University of Southern Indiana (7 p.m. on Nov. 2) and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (2 p.m. on Nov. 3). The Norse’s match against SIUE will also be Senior Day.

WOMEN’S SOCCER PLAYS NON-CONFERENCE FOES: The NKU women’s soccer team, 16-0 overall and ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, will play host to Gannon (Pa.) University at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.

NKU will close out the regular season on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against Mercyhurst (Pa.) College in the Norse’s Senior Day.

Lori Kevill, Jill Johannigman and Bessie Black all scored goals Sunday afternoon as NKU defeated Southern Indiana, 3-0. Black, who leads the GLVC in scoring with 18 goals and 13 assists, added her goal early in the second half off an assist from Betsy Moore.

NKU held a 31-3 advantage in shot attempts and finished with a perfect record (10-0) in the GLVC for the first time in history.

The Norse will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament and host the GLVC semifinals and finals Nov. 3-4 at the Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky. NKU will play Nov. 3 against the winner of the University of Indianapolis/Saint Joseph’s College match, which will be played at Indianapolis on Oct. 31.

The Norse are 30-0-2 during their last 32 matches in the regular season. The last team to defeat the Norse in a regular-season match was the University of Missouri-Rolla, which posted a 5-3 win against NKU on Aug. 27, 2000.

NKU MEN MEET UM-ROLLA: The NKU men’s soccer team, now 10-7 overall, will play host to the University of Missouri-Rolla at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Town & Country Sports Complex.

Jeff Anderson scored a goal and had an assist Sunday afternoon as NKU defeated Southern Indiana, 3-1. Kevin Morath and Nathan Gindele also scored goals for NKU, which finished 7-3 in the GLVC.

Anderson was named the GLVC Player of the Week after scoring three goals and adding three assists last weekend. He scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with two seconds left in regulation Friday night, as NKU defeated the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 3-2.

The Norse will be the No. 4 seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament and play host to No. 5 Quincy (Ill.) University at 1 p.m. on Oct. 31 at the Town & Country Sports Complex. If NKU defeats Quincy in the first round, the Norse will travel to Edwardsville, Ill., to meet top-seeded Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in the GLVC semifinals.

SIUE is 14-1-2 overall, 9-0-1 in the GLVC.
