NKU basketball standout earns NCAA postgraduate scholarship |

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky Universitys Michelle Cottrell has been awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship of $5,000. The NCAA awarded 58 postgraduate scholarships of $5,000 each to 29 men and 29 women who participated in winter sports. Cottrell, a four-year starter for the Norse, is one of five Division II womens basketball players to receive the award this year. A three-time Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year, Cottrell also earned National Player of the Year honors twice from Division II Bulletin. She is the fifth NKU student-athlete in the past four years to receive an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. NKUs Shannon Smith, Kevin Listerman, Malissa Stevenson and Eva Broeg also received NCAA postgraduate scholarships in the past four years. The NCAA annually awards 174 postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes who have excelled academically and athletically and who are in their last year of intercollegiate athletics competition. To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student. |
