NKU DEFEATS 15TH-RANKED INDY, 7-4

Norse improve to 25-8 with win over first-place Indianapolis

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Junior right-hander Josh Whaley upped his record to 7-0 Wednesday as the Northern Kentucky University baseball team rallied to defeat the University of Indianapolis, 7-4, at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex at Friendship Field.

Indianapolis, ranked No. 15 nationally in the latest NCAA Division II poll, scored a pair of unearned runs off Whaley in the second inning and later added another run to take a 3-0 lead. NKU, however, rallied for three runs in the fifth inning to tie the score at 3-3.

Indianapolis took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning on Josh Fuller’s RBI single, but NKU scored twice in the seventh inning and added two more runs in the eighth inning. Matt Mason broke a 4-4 tie with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, and Pat Eschan added a two-run single in the eighth to give the Norse a 7-4 lead.

Whaley recorded his sixth complete game and lowered his earned run average to 2.53. He is now 7-0 and has 50 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched.

Indianapolis is now 24-9 overall, 7-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. NKU improved to 25-8 overall, 5-3 in the GLVC. The Norse will travel to play a doubleheader at the University of Missouri-St. Louis at 1 p.m. Saturday.
