INDY SWEEPS TWO FROM NORSE

10th-ranked Indianapolis wins pair of one-run games

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Mike Kocher’s pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the 13th inning Wednesday gave the University of Indianapolis a 4-3 win over Northern Kentucky University in the first game of a doubleheader.

Indianapolis completed the sweep by holding off the Norse, 7-6, in the nightcap. The Greyhounds, ranked No. 10 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, improved to 35-10 overall, 16-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

NKU is now 31-13 overall, 9-8 in the GLVC.

In the first game, NKU had two chances to take the lead in extra innings. Indianapolis, however, made big defensive plays - one on an attempted suicide squeeze - to keep the game tied. Indianapolis also missed several scoring opportunities - the Greyhounds stranded 17 base runners - but the Norse defense also responded with clutch plays.

Kocher’s RBI single, a bouncing ball up the middle into center field, ended the game in the 13th inning.

In the second game. Indianapolis scored six runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead. NKU eventually cut the advantage to 7-6 with three runs in the seventh inning, but Indianapolis held on to take a 2-1 lead against the Norse in the season series.

NKU’s Jason Martin collected five hits in the doubleheader, and Matt Mason had three RBI in the two games.

NKU will hit the road this weekend for GLVC doubleheaders at the University of Southern Indiana (1 p.m. Saturday) and No. 25 Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (1 p.m. Sunday).
