ASHLAND, Ohio - Nate Moore drove in three runs Saturday as Ashland University defeated Northern Kentucky University, 6-2, to win the NCAA Division II North Central Region championship. J.R. Jacoby added three hits and two RBI as top-seeded Ashland (47-11) earned the trip to the NCAA Division II World Series, which will be held May 25-June 1 at Montgomery, Ala. Jon Krugman pitched 8 2/3 innings to pick up the victory for the Eagles. NKU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Steve Walton, but Ashland responded with a single run in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on Jacobys RBI single, and they built a 4-1 advantage when Moore doubled in two runs later that inning. Ashland added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 6-1 lead. Walton hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 6-2, but NKU would not score again. Shaun Erie set a single-season hits record with 83 for NKU, which finished with a 37-24 record. Erie had two hits Saturday and moved past Jason Martin, who set the record last year with 81. Martin, Walton and Pat Eschan were named to the All-Tournament Team. |
