UW-PARKSIDE DEFEATS NKU, 2-1, IN 13 INNINGS
Aker ends coaching career Sunday with loss to UW-Parkside
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - David Devey scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 13th inning Sunday afternoon as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside defeated Northern Kentucky University, 2-1, at Friendship Field.
Devey singled to start the inning, was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on a wild pitch by NKUs Mark Cain. With two out, Cain then unleashed another wild pitch that enabled Devey to score the winning run.
NKU held a 1-0 lead in the ninth inning, but a single by UW-Parksides Frank Gagliardi and a two-base throwing error by reliever Shaun Fausz on an attempted pick-off move put the runner at third base. Jason Morgan then sent the game into extra innings with a sacrifice fly.
The game on Sunday was the finale of NKU head coach Bill Akers 29-year career with the Norse. Aker announced on Friday that he will retire as NKU head coach after this season.
Aker, the only baseball coach in NKU history, finished his career with an 806-572-1 record. NKU ended the 2000 season 27-28 overall, 8-19 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
