UW-PARKSIDE DEFEATS NKU TWICE

Norse now 27-27 after dropping doubleheader on Saturday

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Freshman relief pitcher Steve Kargus struck out Jason Brown to end the game with the tying runs in scoring position Saturday as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside defeated Northern Kentucky University, 4-2, to complete a doubleheader sweep at Friendship Field.

Kargus relieved Joel Weaver with two out in the ninth inning following consecutive hits by NKU’s Beau Brake and Chad Lubbe. After a passed ball put runners at second and third, Kargus struck out Brown to end the game.

UW-Parkside won the first game, 4-3, as pitcher Scott Dreyer recorded the victory and David Devey came in to pick up the save. Chris Urban’s three-run homer sparked a four-run fourth inning for the Rangers.

NKU dropped to 27-27 overall, 8-18 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UW-Parkside is now 30-16 overall, 11-15 in the GLVC.

NKU will conclude its 2000 season on Sunday with another doubleheader against UW-Parkside at noon. That doubleheader will also mark the final two games of NKU head coach Bill Aker’s 29-year career with the Norse.

Aker announced on Friday that he will retire as NKU head coach after this season.
