NKU SPLITS AT SOUTHERN INDIANA |
Norse need win Sunday to clinch GLVC Tournament berth |
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Mike Marksbury and Justin Seiter combined on a five-hitter Saturday as Northern Kentucky University defeated the University of Southern Indiana, 3-1, in the first game of a doubleheader. Keith Jackson collected a run-scoring double for the Norse in the second inning, while Lewis Jones later added an RBI single. Marksbury (5-4) lasted 5 2/3 innings and allowed just three hits and one earned run, while Seiter finished off Southern Indiana and recorded his seventh save of the season. In the nightcap, the Southern Indiana pitching duo of Joe Stanisz and Matt Goans limited NKU to just two hits as the Screaming Eagles posted a 2-0 win. NKUs Dizzy Peyton allowed just four hits and two earned runs in eight innings, but Southern Indiana struck for single runs in the first and fifth innings to earn the doubleheader split. NKU is now 28-23 overall, 15-14 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse are currently in fifth place in the GLVC standings, and the top six teams in the standings will qualify for the GLVC Tournament. NKU will conclude its regular season at 1 p.m. Sunday with a single game against Southern Indiana, and the Norse need a win to clinch a berth in the GLVC Tournament. Quincy University (14-14 GLVC), Kentucky Wesleyan College (14-15 GLVC) and Saint Josephs College (14-15 GLVC) all trail NKU in the standings, but each of those teams own tiebreakers over the Norse. If NKU defeats Southern Indiana, the Norse will secure a spot in the GLVC Tournament. If the Norse do not win Sunday, that will open the door for Quincy, Kentucky Wesleyan and Saint Josephs to clinch berths. Kentucky Wesleyan will play host to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday, while Saint Josephs will finish the regular season at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Quincy will play at Lewis University on Sunday, and the Hawks will meet Missouri-St. Louis on Monday. |
