NKU EARNS SPLIT AGAINST QUINCY

Seiter works out of bases-loaded jam in 9th as Norse post 2-1 win

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Justin Seiter worked out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the top of the ninth inning Sunday as Northern Kentucky University held off Quincy University, 2-1, in the second game of a doubleheader at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex at Friendship Field.

After Quincy’s first three batters reached base to begin the ninth, Wes Steele chopped a grounder that Seiter fielded and threw home to force out Kevin Reynolds at the plate. Eric Caby then stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a line drive down the third-base line.

The line drive was picked off by third baseman Shaun Erie, who also stepped on the bag to complete a game-ending, unassisted double play. It was NKU’s third victory against Quincy during the four-game series.

Seiter worked 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the victory and improve his record this spring to 4-2. The junior reliever has a 0.65 earned run average this season and leads NKU with six saves.

NKU starter Matt Marksbury worked 6 1/3 innings and allowed just three hits and one run. He also recorded six strikeouts before being lifted for Seiter with one out in the seventh inning.

Lewis Jones went 2-for-3 with a run batted in for NKU, which is 28-20 overall, 21-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse have won 11 of their last 13 games to move into third place in the GLVC standings.

The top six teams will qualify for the GLVC Tournament, which will be held May 6-9 at Sauget, Ill.

In the opener, Brandon Waeltz hurled a three-hitter as Quincy posted a 3-0 victory against NKU. Kevin Reynolds hit a two-run double in the fifth inning to snap a scoreless tie, and the Hawks added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

NKU will play a non-conference doubleheader at Ashland University at 2 p.m. Tuesday. NKU will return to GLVC play at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when Bellarmine University and the Norse meet in a doubleheader at Midland Field in Amelia, Ohio.

The doubleheader was moved to Amelia because Midland Field has lights, and the times were shifted to accommodate Bellarmine’s exam schedule this week.
