NKU SPLITS TWO WITH SIUE |

Wiedeman improves to 5-1 with victory in nightcap |

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Junior pitcher Matt Wiedeman scattered seven hits in eight innings Saturday as the Northern Kentucky University baseball team defeated Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, 7-3, in the second game of a doubleheader at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex at Friendship Field. Wiedeman allowed just three runs - all in the third inning - and finished with three strikeouts to improve his record this spring to 5-1. Jerrod Fraley went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, while teammate Keith Jackson was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Fraleys two-run single in the fifth inning snapped a 3-3 tie and gave NKU a 5-3 lead. Jackson added an RBI triple in the seventh to extend the Norses advantage to 6-3, and Fraley drove in Jackson with a single to give NKU a 7-3 lead. In the opener, SIUE pitcher Ron Jones improved to 4-0 as the Cougars posted a 7-4 win over NKU. Craig Ohlau went 3-for-4 with a triple and five RBI to pace the SIUE offense. SIUE scored three runs off NKU starter and loser Derrik Moeves in the seventh inning to extend a 4-3 lead into a four-run cushion at 7-3. NKU tallied its final run in the bottom of the seventh on Jacksons RBI double. Jackson was 3-for-4 to lead NKU, while Fraley added two hits. Matt Wagers was 1-for-3 with two RBI for the Norse. Moeves, now 2-3 this season, allowed 10 hits in seven innings on the mound and recorded nine strikeouts. NKU is 17-17 overall, 10-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. SIUE is 11-23 overall, 8-13 in the GLVC. The two teams will wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday, with the first game starting at noon. |
