UW-PARKSIDE WINS TWICE AGAINST NKU

Rangers sweep doubleheader from Norse

KENOSHA, Wis. - Brandon Kellbach tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team to a 1-0 victory over Northern Kentucky University in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.

Kellbach finished with eight strikeouts and allowed only singles by Justin Mundt and Conor McGeehan to pick up the victory and halt NKU’s 11-game win streak against Wisconsin-Parkside during the past three seasons. Before Sunday, the Rangers had not defeated NKU since the 2001 season.

Andy Garms’ run-scoring single in the third inning off NKU starter Rick Wood was all Kellbach would need to improve his record to 6-0 this spring. Wood, who allowed just five hits and one walk, is now 4-2.

In the nightcap, Wisconsin-Parkside scored four times in the first inning and held on for a 4-2 victory to sweep the doubleheader. Jason Wenzel’s two-run single keyed the Rangers’ first-inning outburst against NKU starter Matt Marksbury, who gave up eight hits and two earned runs in eight innings on the mound.

Alex Frank led the NKU offense by going 2-for-3 with an RBI. The Norse - who swept a doubleheader from Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday - were limited to six hits in the nightcap.

NKU dropped to 15-15 overall, 8-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Wisconsin-Parkside is 20-11 overall, 14-6 in the GLVC.

NKU will play a road doubleheader at Bellarmine University at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The Norse will return home for a four-game series against Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville next Saturday and Sunday at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex at Friendship Field.
