Moeves picks up win, 10 strikeouts in opener |

INDIANAPOLIS - Sophomore right-hander Derrik Moeves allowed just three hits in six innings and finished with 10 strikeouts Wednesday as Northern Kentucky University defeated the University of Indianapolis, 3-0, in the first game of a doubleheader. Moeves, a graduate of Highlands High School, improved to 3-3 this season. Justin Seiter pitched an inning of scoreless relief to pick up his third save of the spring. Craig Craddock went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple to lead the NKU offense in the opener. Shaun Erie also was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Norse. Justin Mundt and Keith Jackson each collected run-scoring singles in the seventh inning to extend a 1-0 NKU lead into a 3-0 advantage. Seiter allowed two hits in the bottom of the seventh, but he worked out of the trouble and notched the save. In the nightcap, NKU used a six-run outburst in the eighth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and rolled to a 10-2 victory. Jerrod Fraleys RBI single gave the Norse a 3-2 lead, and NKU added five more runs in the eighth to complete the doubleheader sweep. Fraley finished with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate, and he scored a pair of runs. Mundt was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, and Matt Wagers went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Alex Frank added a two-run homer in the ninth inning for NKU, and Jackson went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Joe Kendall added two RBI for NKU, which improved to 20-18 overall, 13-11 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Indianapolis dropped to 16-25 overall, 11-17 in the GLVC. NKU will travel to Romeoville, Ill., this weekend to meet Lewis University in a four-game series. The two teams will begin with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. |
