KWC SWEEPS PAIR FROM NKU

Panthers rally late to take opener; score early to win nightcap

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Scott Agnew’s run-scoring single in the sixth inning snapped a 2-2 tie Friday and gave Kentucky Wesleyan College a 3-2 win over Northern Kentucky University in the first game of a doubleheader at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex at Friendship Field.

Agnew’s RBI hit capped a three-run sixth inning for Kentucky Wesleyan, which trailed 2-0 before the outburst. The Panthers had managed just one hit in the previous five innings off NKU starter Mike Marksbury, but they began the sixth with three consecutive hits to knock the NKU pitcher out of the game.

Kentucky Wesleyan starter Adam Gautreau made the one-run lead stand and recorded the complete-game victory. He finished with seven strikeouts and allowed just one walk.

In the nightcap, Kentucky Wesleyan scored six times in the first inning and held on for an 8-4 win to complete the sweep. NKU starter Derrick Moeves retired just one batter and allowed six earned runs in the first inning.

Josh Perkins went 3-for-4 and had two RBI for NKU in the second game, and Jerrod Fraley added two hits and two RBI.

Kentucky Wesleyan improved to 18-16 overall, 10-11 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. NKU, which has dropped seven straight games, is now 19-19 overall, 11-10 in the GLVC.

NKU will conclude its three-game series with Kentucky Wesleyan at noon Saturday.
