Holmes: GLVC Player of the Week |
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS,
Ky. - Northern Kentucky University's Liz Holmes has been named Great
Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in volleyball.
Holmes, a junior
middle hitter, guided the Norse to a pair of victories last week
and collected her 1,000th career kill in the process. She notched
15 kills in a 30-24, 30-26, 30-21 win over Georgetown (Ky.) last
Thursday. Holmes also added eight digs, two blocks and hit .500
in that victory over the nation's 16th-ranked NAIA team.
Holmes also
became just the 11th player in Norse history to reach 1,000 career
kills when she hammered down an attack against Georgetown in the
third game. A graduate of Mercy High School in Cincinnati, Holmes
enters this week with 1,009 career kills.
On Saturday,
Holmes helped the Norse sweep past visiting Wheeling Jesuit, 30-15,
30-16, 30-15. She recorded nine kills, seven digs, two blocks and
a service ace in the victory. She also finished with a .538 hitting
percentage in that match.
For the week, Holmes averaged four kills, 2.5 digs, 0.67 blocks
per game and finished the week with a hitting percentage of .513.
Holmes is averaging 3.0 kills, 2.4 digs, 0.45 blocks per game this
season and is currently ranked sixth in the GLVC with 0.53 service
aces per game.
NKU improved to 7-7 overall with the wins last week and is currently
2-1 in the GLVC. The Norse return to action at Bellarmine Tuesday
at 7 p.m.
NKU has defeated
Bellarmine 27 consecutive times entering the Tuesday match in Louisville,
Ky. The Norse have not lost to the Knights since the 1992 GLVC Tournament.
A year ago,
NKU knocked off Bellarmine twice. The Norse defeated the Knights
in four games at Louisville, Ky., and later recorded a 3-0 sweep
in Regents Hall.
Indianapolis
will visit Regents Hall at 7 p.m. Friday to meet NKU in a key GLVC
match. The Norse will also play host to Saint Joseph's at 2 p.m.
Saturday.
