INDIANAPOLIS
- The Northern Kentucky University softball team’s woes continued
on Sunday as the Norse lost a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference
games to Indianapolis by scores of 5-2 and 6-4.
After NKU tied
the opening game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning, Indy’s
Megan Russell and Jessica Breeden came up with run-scoring singles
in the bottom half of the stanza and coasted to the win. In the
nightcap it was Russell delivering the big blow, this time with
a grand slam in the fifth to ice the win.
NKU responded
with home runs from Becky Napier and Rose Broderick in the top of
the seventh, but it wasn’t enough as the Greyhounds completed
the sweep.
Cara Parker
was the offensive standout for the Norse, going 3-for-7 on the day
with a double and an RBI.
The losses drop
NKU to 22-24 overall and 7-13 in the GLVC. The Norse are on the
verge of being eliminated from GLVC Tournament contention as a result
of the two losses. If Southern Indiana wins one time in its final
six games, NKU - now in 10th place in the standings - will not qualify
for the GLVC Tournament's eight-team field.
NKU looks to
snap its five-game losing streak Wednesday as the Norse travel to
Wayne State (Mich.). First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
