NKU EARNS SPLIT WITH SAINT JOSEPH’S - March 26, 2006
Norse rally from 4-0 deficit in nightcap to post 11-4 victory

Sarah King hit a home run in the opener

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Cara Parker and Rachele Vogelpohl each hit two-run homers in the second game Sunday as Northern Kentucky University rallied to defeat Saint Joseph’s, 11-4, at the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.

Saint Joseph’s took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning, but NKU scored four times to even the score. Parker’s two-run homer started the rally for the Norse, who later tied the score on Ricki Rothbauer’s RBI single.

NKU struck for seven runs in the sixth inning. Rothbauer’s run-scoring single gave the Norse a 5-4 lead, and the Norse eventually plated six more runs. Vogelpohl capped the seven-run outburst by hammering her third homer of the season over the left-center field wall.

Heather Cotner was 2-for-3 with two RBI for NKU, while Kara Lorenz added two hits and scored twice. Freshman pitcher Candace White went the distance for the Norse and improved to 9-5.

In the opener, Saint Joseph’s scored four times in the top of the 11th inning and held on for a 9-6 victory. Jesse Privett and and Cheryl Zakowski each had RBI doubles in the 11th to key the four-run outburst.

NKU sophomore catcher Sarah King was 5-for-6 with a home run in the opener. Parker collected three RBI for the Norse, who held a 5-4 lead with two outs in the seventh inning. Zakowski, however, tied the game with an RBI single, and the Pumas forced extra innings.

NKU is 19-9 overall, 3-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Saint Joseph’s dropped to 12-8 overall, 1-3 in the GLVC.

NKU will play at Rockhurst next Saturday at noon.
