INDY SWEEPS PAST 16th-RANKED NKU - March 25, 2006
Greyhounds defeat Norse twice, snap NKU’s 14-game winning streak

Kara Lorenz scores the tying run in the opener

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Beth Wendlinger’s two-run double in the top of the eighth inning snapped a 1-1 tie as Indianapolis defeated Northern Kentucky University, 3-1, in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.

Wendlinger also picked up the win in the opener, allowing six hits and an unearned run in eight innings. Indianapolis owned a 1-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and a runner at second base, and NKU’s Sarah King stepped to the plate.

King hit a grounder to shortstop Madison Dickman, whose throw to first base was in the dirt. First baseman Danielle Melone was unable to field the ball, and the throwing error allowed Kara Lorenz to score from second base.

In the top of the eighth, Wendlinger delivered a two-run double. She then retired the side in the bottom of the inning to pick up the victory and end NKU’s current winning streak at 14 games.

It also marked the first time since May 2, 2004, that NKU had lost to a Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent. The Norse entered Saturday with 24 straight wins against GLVC teams.

In the nightcap, Indianapolis scored seven times in the first inning en route to a 12-6 victory over NKU. The Greyhounds used a 17-hit attack to improve to 14-12 overall, 3-3 in the GLVC.

Lorenz drove in three runs to lead NKU, which dropped to 18-8 overall, 2-2 in the GLVC. King, Amanda Smith and Katybeth Coode each had two hits for the Norse.

NKU will play host to Saint Joseph’s at noon Sunday.
