ROTHBAUER, KING SPARK NKU WIN IN 10th - Feb. 24, 2006

Ricki Rothbauer

DECATUR, Ala. - Sarah King’s three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning highlighted a six-run outburst as Northern Kentucky University defeated North Alabama, 8-3, at the Charger Softball Chillout.

Ricki Rothbauer went 4-for-5 and scored twice to lead the NKU offense, while King was 3-for-5 with four runs batted in. After the Norse had already snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the 10th inning, King stepped to the plate with two runners aboard and smashed a three-run homer to left field.

North Alabama scored a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 8-3, but NKU pitcher Amanda Smith picked up the complete-game victory. Shatona Campbell also homered for the Norse.

In the nightcap, tournament host Alabama-Huntsville erupted for seven runs in the second inning and posted an 8-0 win over NKU. Kristen Spencer hit a three-run homer to spark the second-inning outburst for the Chargers.

The Norse, who began the day with a 6-3 loss to West Florida, are 4-4. NKU will play Emporia State and West Georgia on Saturday to conclude the tournament.
