HIGHLAND HEIGHTS,
Ky. - Katybeth Coode’s first career home run snapped a 2-2
tie in the bottom of the sixth inning Sunday afternoon and lifted
Northern Kentucky University to a 3-2 win over Southern Indiana
in the second game of a doubleheader.
Coode, a freshman
from Louisville, Ky., stepped to the plate with one out in the bottom
of the sixth against Southern Indiana pitcher Missy Grover and the
game tied at 2-all. Coode hammered a Grover pitch just over the
fence down the right-field line to give NKU a 3-2 lead with the
first home run of her collegiate career.
The one-run
lead was enough for Norse freshman pitcher Candace White, who induced
Lacey Ligmanowski to fly out to right fielder Shatona Campbell to
end the game with a runner on first. White finished with five strikeouts
and upped her record to 11-7 this spring.
Sarah King
went 3-for-3 with a homer and double to lead NKU, which is 23-13
overall, 7-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The sophomore
catcher gave NKU a 2-0 lead in the first inning by hammering a Grover
pitch over the center-field fence for her fifth home run of the
season.
Lindsey McNaughton
responded for Southern Indiana in the second inning by blasting
a two-run homer to right-center field and tying the score at 2-all.
In the opener
Sunday, Southern Indiana rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to post
an 8-4 win over NKU. Kathy Wood went 4-for-4 and scored twice for
the Screaming Eagles, who used a 14-hit attack to post the victory.
Kristin Eickholt
added a homer and four runs batted in for Southern Indiana, which
is 22-13 overall, 6-4 in the GLVC.
Rachele Vogelpohl
and Amanda Smith each had two RBI for NKU, while Heather Cotner
was 3-for-4 with a run scored.
NKU will play
host to Bellarmine at 2 p.m. Tuesday in a GLVC doubleheader at the
Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.
