DAHLONEGA,
Ga. - Amanda Smith hurled a four-hit shutout as Northern Kentucky
University defeated North
Georgia, 6-0, at the Fire Mountain Classic on Saturday.
Smith, a freshman
from Canal Winchester, Ohio, struck out four batters and upped her
record to 15-6 this spring. Ricki Rothbauer went 2-for-4 with two
runs batted in, while Shatona Campbell was 2-for-3 with two runs
scored.
NKU began Saturday
by posting an 8-5 win over Valdosta State. Smith went 2-for-4 with
two RBI, while teammate Cara Parker was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Rothbauer added
two hits and scored twice, while Sarah King drove in two runs. Rachele
Vogelpohl was 2-for-4 and scored a run.
The Norse took
an 8-1 lead into the seventh inning, but Valdosta State scored four
times to make it a game. Smith relieved starter Candace White in
the seventh and notched the save by getting the final two outs.
NKU finished
3-1 at the Fire Mountain Classic and is 28-14 overall. The Norse
will play host to Wayne (Mich.) State at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the
Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.
