WILDER, Ky. – The
Northern Kentucky University women’s
soccer team honored its two seniors Sunday afternoon not only with
a halftime ceremony, but also with a 3-1 victory over Kentucky
Wesleyan in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
After a scoreless
first half, Kristen Chinn struck first for the Panthers, wrestling
the ball away from the Norse defense in the
52nd minute and pushing a shot just right of goalkeeper Jenna
Kramer for her sixth goal of the season.
NKU answered with three
straight goals. The first came off a Hope Zinser free kick in
the 60th minute. The ball took one bounce
in
the 18-yard box and came straight to Kendall Day, who just
headed the ball above KWC goalie Natalie McCaslin to tie the game.
Zinser
started another scoring play just three minutes later, pushing
the ball ahead to Kara Costello, who found Cara Alldred
inside
the penalty area. Alldred took one dribble to the right to
elude McCaslin and shot on a wide-open net for the NKU lead.
Lauren
Franzen put the icing on the cake in the 87th minute when Kendall
Day caught McCaslin out of position and passed
to Franzen
for the shot on the wide-open net for the 3-1 final score.
Jenna
Kramer made two saves in the victory for the Norse, who improved
to 11-4 overall and 7-4 in the GLVC.
The Norse also honored senior
Jayme Light, who played in her final regular-season game. Light's
31 career goals
put her
fifth all-time
among NKU scorers.
NKU hits the road with a chance to
win home-field advantage in the GLVC quarterfinals as the Norse
face Rockhurst
on Friday before closing the regular season against
Drury on Sunday.
