WILDER, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women’s
soccer couldn’t hold off a second-half onslaught, as they
fell Friday to Southern Illinois at Edwardsville, 3-2, in Great
Lakes Valley Conference play.
Morgan Price got the No. 7 Norse (9-1
overall, 5-1 GLVC) on the board in the 31st minute after a Lauren
Franzen throw-in. Megan
Smith flicked the ball along to Price who found the twine for the
second time this season. The goal held through halftime.
SIUE’s
Sade Akpore had the equalizer just two minutes into the second
half, as she came from her defensive position to take
a shot to the left side of NKU goalkeeper Jenna Kramer for her
first goal of the year. Correen Roark put the Cougars ahead with
her second tally of the season, scoring on a corner kick play for
the one-goal advantage.
SIUE’s Katie Yearian
found the net in the 64th minute for what proved to be the game-winning
goal,
making a 50-yard run and
shaking NKU defenders for her team-leading seventh marker of the
season.
Ashley Warndorf brought
the SIUE lead down to one with her third goal of the season,
scoring in the 83rd minute after Lauren
Franzen made a run through the Cougar defense. However, the Norse
could not draw level in the game’s closing minutes.
Kaci Backs
got the win for SIUE in net, making two saves after starting
the second half. Jenna Kramer made three saves for NKU.
Northern
Kentucky closes the weekend home stand Sunday when they face
defending GLVC champion Quincy.
