WILDER, Ky. – Kara Costello’s first collegiate goal
proved to be the difference as the Northern Kentucky University
women’s soccer team defeated Ashland, 2-1, in non-conference
play.
Costello’s
goal came in the 64th minute after the Ashland defense attempted
to
clear the ball out of their penalty area.
Brandi Doss took the clearance attempt off the head and played
it to Costello, who took a shot to the right side of Ashland goalkeeper
Marie Supanich and found the net.
The marker
followed Jayme Light’s
team and conference-leading sixth goal of the season, scored just
27 seconds into the contest. From the
opening kickoff the Norse offense pressed forward, keeping Ashland
back on their heels. Light passed the ball across to Ashley Warndorf
20 yards out, who flicked it back to Light on a well-timed give-and-go
to open the night’s scoring.
Ashland drew
the score to 2-1 in the 79th minute when Erin Charnley’s
high crossing pass found Alicia VanZanten, who went to the air
and put a shot home on a header. The Norse defense held from there
for the 2-1 decision.
Jenna Kramer got the victory in net with two
saves. Supanich had seven saves for Ashland in the loss.
Northern
Kentucky (6-0), ranked No. 12 in the latest NCAA Division II
national poll, returns to conference play Sunday when they
host rival Bellarmine. BOX
