WILDER, Ky. – Lauren
Franzen scored three goals and assisted on another to lead Northern
Kentucky University to a 4-0 victory
over Concord (W. Va.) in the John Toebben Classic presented by
National City on Sunday morning.
With the game scoreless five minutes into the second half, Cara
Alldred dribbled the ball up the middle and passed outside to Brandi
Doss. Doss centered the ball to Franzen, who slid a shot just inside
the left post to open the scoring.
Franzen’s second goal came four minutes later off a takeaway
by Alldred. The NKU captain then found Franzen, who fired a shot
toward the top right corner that glanced off Concord goalkeeper
Sarah Coelho’s hands into the net.
Ashley Warndorf increased the lead to 3-0 after picking up a loose
ball on Concord’s side of the field. She found Franzen on
the right side once again, but the junior centered the ball right
back to Warndorf from point-blank range.
Franzen’s hat trick came less than a minute later, as Alex
Armstrong stripped the Concord defense and passed ahead to a wide-open
Franzen, who buried a shot into the net to close out the scoring.
The NKU defense was dominant, allowing just one shot the entire
game. Alayna Fontaine did not see a shot on goal as she picked
up her second straight shutout.
The Norse (2-0) will travel to play Findlay on Friday afternoon.
