HIGHLAND HEIGHTS,
Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s
soccer team opens the 2007 season Aug. 24 against Tiffin in the
John Toebben Classic presented by National City at the Town & Country
Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky.
Two days later, the Norse will take
on Concord (W. Va.) at Wilder to conclude the season-opening John
Toebben Classic. After a week on the road, the Norse will return
home for four straight matches, starting with the Great Lakes Valley
Conference opener against Lewis on Sept. 7. The Norse entertain
Wisconsin-Parkside two days later.
After Southern Illinois
at Edwardsville – in
its final year in the GLVC after announcing its intention to reclassify
to NCAA Division I status – visits Wilder on Sept. 28, GLVC
regular-season champion Quincy will take the field Sept. 30. Southern
Indiana (Oct. 12) and Kentucky Wesleyan
(Oct. 14) round out the home schedule.
Jayme Light, the GLVC’s
second-leading goal scorer, returns for her senior season. With
25 career goals, Light stands tied with Amy Law in 10th place all-time
on the NKU scoring list. She, along with fellow senior Cara Alldred,
will captain the Norse in 2007.
Many players will attempt to bounce
back from injury, including goalkeepers Jenna Kramer, whose season
was cut short due to a collarbone injury, and Alyana Fontaine,
who lost the 2006 campaign to knee surgery.
NKU coach Bob Sheehan
has also signed seven to join the Norse for the 2007 campaign,
including Megan Smith, who scored 20 goals for Batavia High School
in 2006, and Allison Ott, a two-time All-Fort Ancient Valley Conference
honoree at Mason High School.
