NKU STRETCHES WIN STREAK TO 12 - Oct. 30, 2005
Top-seeded Norse defeat Saint Joseph’s, 4-0, in GLVC Tournament opener

Amy Law attempts a shot on Sunday

WILDER, Ky. - Amy Law scored a goal and assisted on another as the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team began the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with 4-0 victory over Saint Joseph’s at the Town & Country Sports Complex on Sunday.

Alex Armstrong finished with two assists for NKU, which extended its winning streak to 12 games. The top-seeded Norse improved to 16-2 overall and held an opponent scoreless for the ninth time this season.

Carla Schierloh began the scoring at the 15:29 mark when she perfectly placed a 20-yard shot over the outstretched arms of Saint Joseph’s goalie Katie Awerkamp. Seven minutes later, Jayme Light gave NKU a 2-0 lead with her sixth goal of the season off an assist from Law.

Kristen Votapek tallied her GLVC-leading 15th goal of the season at the 27:42 mark by finishing off a rebound shot.

Law capped the scoring in the 84th minute with her 11th goal of the year. Sam Westerling and Kelly Bare combined for the shutout for NKU, now 46-1-4 against GLVC opponents at the Town & Country Sports Complex since moving its home games to the Wilder facility in 1998.

NKU will play host to the GLVC Tournament semifinals this Friday at the Town & Country Sports Complex. The Norse will meet No. 4 seed Rockhurst at 5 p.m. Friday.

In the other semifinal game at 7:30 p.m., No. 2 seed Southern Illinois at Edwardsville will meet No. 3 seed Wisconsin-Parkside.

The GLVC championship game is set for noon Sunday. NKU won five consecutive GLVC Tournament championships from 1998-2002. The Norse finished as runner-up in that event the past two years to Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Norse are ranked seventh nationally in this week’s NCAA Division II poll. The Norse are also No. 1 in the latest NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region rankings.

If NKU remains No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region, the Norse will play host to the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament Nov. 11-13.
