HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball team plays a non-conference road game at Mercyhurst (Pa.) Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The game can be heard live on the Internet at www.nkunorse.com.

NKU is 1-0 after posting a 71-53 win over Brescia (Ky.) last Thursday in Regents Hall. The Norse are ranked 18th nationally in the WBCA’s NCAA Division II poll.

BRACKIE TAKES UP THE SLACK: NKU junior guard Karen Brackman, making her first-ever start, scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Norse past Brescia. Brackman also equaled her career best by grabbing six rebounds. The Minster, Ohio, native added four steals as NKU cruised to the opening-game win.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE TROUBLE: NKU senior center Angela Healy collected a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds against Brescia. Healy, who was named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference second team last season, now has 769 career points at NKU. She averaged 11.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game last season.

IMPRESSIVE DEBUT: NKU freshman center Kendra Caldwell scored eight points, grabbed three rebounds and blocked two shots against Brescia. Caldwell is a graduate of Xenia High School.

LANTRY’S REJECTIONS: NKU sophomore guard Rachel Lantry blocked three shots during the first half against Brescia. As a freshman, Lantry blocked a total of three shots the entire season. The former Holy Cross High School standout also added two steals against Brescia and grabbed three rebounds.

LONG-RANGE BLUES: NKU finished 2-for-16 from 3-point range against Brescia. The Norse were 0-for-7 in the first half in that game. Danyelle Echoles, who finished with eight points, drained NKU’s first 3-pointer against Brescia seven minutes into the second half. NKU played without junior guard Jessie Slack, a long-range shooter who sat out due to an injury.

Slack enjoyed an impressive debut for the Norse during an exhibition game against the University of Cincinnati on Nov. 1 by pouring in 24 points as NKU dropped a 69-67 decision. Slack buried six shots from 3-point range against Cincinnati. She started 22 games last season at East Carolina and averaged 6.7 points as the Pirates captured the Conference USA championship.

ABOUT MERCYHURST: The Lakers are 1-1 after dropping an 80-67 decision to Le Moyne (N.Y.) last week. Mercyhurst opened the season with a 67-61 win over Mansfield. Stephanie Prischak leads the team in scoring at 20.5 ppg.

THE LAST TIME AGAINST MERCYHURST: On Dec. 29, 2006, Karmen Graham scored a team-leading 17 points in just 18 minutes of action as NKU cruised past Mercyhurst, 76-50, at Lakeland, Fla. Graham finished 5-for-8 from the field and made all six of her free throws.

Down by 23 points early in the second half, Mercyhurst switched to an aggressive, 2-1-2 trapping press that gave NKU problems. The Lakers used a 12-0 run to slice a 46-23 NKU lead down to 46-35 with 13:33 remaining in the game.

A conventional three-point play by Cassie Brannen, followed by a Brittany Winner basket and two free throws from Karyn Creager extended NKU's advantage to 53-35. The Norse coasted from there, with the final margin being their largest lead.

GLVC TRIP LOOMS: NKU will begin GLVC play Nov. 29 with a road game at Quincy. The Norse conclude that trip Dec. 1 with a game at Southern Illinois at Edwardsville.
