INDIANAPOLIS – The
Northern Kentucky University women’s tennis team played
its way into the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship match
on Friday after defeating Bellarmine and SIU Edwardsville in
the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, by identical
5-0 scores.
The Norse swept
through the doubles matches against Bellarmine, with Emily Okerson
and Maggie Koetter picking up
the necessary
singles victories to down the Knights. Okerson defeated Lauren
Cotton, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 5 flight, while Koetter bested Katy
Sutton, 6-2, 6-0. Only Patricia Brinck was behind in her match
when the Norse were declared victorious.
NKU again cruised
to victory in the doubles competition against SIU Edwardsville,
while Stephanie Isaacs had to take Laura Horning
to a 7-5 second set for the victory. Kristen Sunday posted
matching
6-4 sets over Ali Wulfers to end the match for the Norse.
Northern
Kentucky (16-3) will take on No. 21 Drury on Saturday morning
for a shot at the GLVC Championship. Earlier this season,
the Norse and Panthers played to a 6-3 decision that could
have swung either way, as Okerson fell in a second-set tiebreak.
Three
of the singles matches in that meeting went to a third set,
while Brinck and Koetter dueled Lindsey Castrodale and Thu
Ha Mai to
an 8-6 finish in the No. 3 doubles flight.
Start time
is scheduled for 10 a.m.
