INDIANAPOLIS – Northern Kentucky University’s Steven
Beattie has been honored as the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player
of the Week in men’s soccer, the league office announced
Tuesday.
Beattie, a sophomore forward, had an outstanding opening
weekend for the Norse, scoring four goals and adding an assist
as NKU picked
up a pair of non-conference wins.
On Friday, Beattie had the winning
goal against West Virginia Wesleyan in the second overtime, sending
a 30-yard blast to the upper corner
to take a 2-1 victory over the Bobcats.
On Sunday, Beattie opened
the scoring in the 22nd minute to claim the game-winner as the
Norse rolled over Charleston (W.Va.), 9-0.
Beattie finished the game with three goals and added an assist
in the second half.
This marks the second time that Beattie has
received Player of the Week honors.
RAISING THE RANKS: NKU
jumped two spots to No. 3 in this week’s
NCAA Division II national poll. Losses by defending national champion
Franklin Pierce and Montevallo made room for the Norse to slide
ahead in the rankings.
The Norse are behind national runner-up Lincoln
Memorial and national semifinalist Midwestern State (Texas) in
the rankings.
The performance
mimics NKU’s ranking from last
season, when the Norse jumped from a preseason No. 8 ranking to
No. 3 after
two weeks of action.
This weekend,
the Norse will host Carson-Newman and Findlay in non-conference
action.
Also, the John Toebben Soccer
Clinic will
be held on Saturday at 12:30. The event will take place at Town & Country
Sports Complex in Wilder, Ky., and is open to all kids ages 14
and under. |
