INDIANAPOLIS – After scoring two goals in two games, Northern
Kentucky University’s Braden Bishop has earned his third
Great Lakes Valley Conference men’s soccer Player of the
Week award of the season.
The Centerville,
Ohio, native is the first men’s soccer player
to earn GLVC Player of the Week honors three times in a season
since Wisconsin-Parkside’s Thom Peer accomplished the feat
in 2000. Bishop opened the scoring Friday night against Rockhurst,
converting a penalty kick in the 31st minute for his 12th goal
of the season. The goal helped spur the Norse to a 2-1 victory,
clinching the GLVC regular-season championship.
The sophomore
scored his team-high 13th goal Sunday against Drury, adding the
insurance
marker on an unassisted goal in the 66th minute
in a 2-0 victory, capping NKU’s 13-0 conference record.
This
marks the fourth time an NKU player has been selected as the GLVC
Player of the Week, a first for the Norse men’s soccer
program. In 2004, Kyle Roberts, Chris Thompson and goalkeeper Nate
Madden each earned the honor.
Bishop was
previously named GLVC Player of the Week on Sept. 24 after scoring
a goal
each against Missouri-Rolla
and Missouri-St.
Louis, and on Oct. 8 after notching the game-winning goal against
Indianapolis and posting two assists against Saint Joseph’s.
Steven
Beattie was named GLVC Player of the Week on Sept. 17 after recording
four goals on the weekend, including a hat trick against
Ashland and the game-winner over Bellarmine.
NKU, currently the
top-ranked team in the nation in the Division II national poll
with an 18-0 overall record, will open the GLVC
Tournament on Sunday by hosting Wisconsin-Parkside in the quarterfinals
at Wilder, Ky. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. |
