WILDER, Ky.
- Six years ago, on a hot and humid Sunday afternoon at the Town
& Country Sports Complex, Northern Kentucky University and West
Virginia Wesleyan hooked up in arguably the most exciting men's
soccer game in Norse history.
West Virginia
Wesleyan rallied from a late two-goal deficit in that one and pulled
out a 6-5 victory in overtime on Sept. 3, 2000.
The same two
teams met again Sunday afternoon in the fourth annual John Toebben
Classic, presented by National City. NKU jumped out to an early
two-goal advantage, but, unlike that high-scoring, no-lead-is-safe
contest six years ago, this time the Norse defense made sure there
would be no comeback by West Virginia Wesleyan.
Chris Thompson
scored a goal 29 seconds into the game, and NKU coasted to a 4-0
win over West Virginia Wesleyan. The Norse defense did not allow
a shot by the Bobcats until the second half and improved to 2-0.
NKU wasted no
time in getting on the board as Seth Eckerlin played the ball into
the box, where the West Virginia Wesleyan defense misplayed the
ball. Thompson took advantage of the misplay and sent a 15-yard
shot into the back of the net just 29 seconds into the game.
In the 11th
minute, NKU struck again as Chad Cook took a pass from Mirza Causevic
and netted his first career goal for a 2-0 lead. The Norse extended
their advantage to 3-0 at the 34:22 mark when Kyle Roberts converted
a penalty kick after a foul was called on West Virginia Wesleyan
in the box.
Tab Bere added
a goal off an assist from Roberts in the 67th minute to wrap up
the scoring. NKU finished with a 16-5 advantage in shots. Norse
goalie Andy Ortman notched his second straight shutout and had one
save.
NKU will begin
Great Lakes Valley Conference play at 5 p.m. Friday with a home
game against Indianapolis at the Town & Country Sports Complex.
