NKU SHOCKS UW-PARKSIDE ON SUNDAY - Oct. 30, 2005
Norse take advantage of Ranger mistake in 2-1 victory in GLVC Tournament

Jeremy Curington had five saves

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team took advantage of a Wisconsin-Parkside own goal in the second half Sunday to post a 2-1 upset over the third-seeded Rangers in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

The misplayed ball by Wisconsin-Parkside in the 71st minute eluded goalie Victor Perez and bounced into the net to give NKU a 2-1 lead. Norse goalie Jeremy Curington stopped the Rangers the remainder of the game, and sixth-seeded NKU (11-7-2) won in the GLVC Tournament for the first time since 1997.

The Norse are now 2-9-2 against the Rangers during the past nine seasons. Earlier this fall, Wisconsin-Parkside had posted a 4-0 win over NKU at Wilder, Ky.

NKU took a 1-0 lead just 13 minutes into the game when Tony Capurro took a cross from Tony Ray and scored his fifth goal of the season. It remained 1-0 until the 67:13 mark, when Wisconsin-Parkside’s Ben Tommerup converted a penalty kick to draw the Rangers even at 1-all.

Curington finished with five saves for NKU, which will meet second-seeded Rockhurst at 6 p.m. (EST) Friday at St. Louis, Mo. Top-seeded Southern Illinois at Edwardsville will play No. 4 seed Quincy in the other GLVC Tournament semifinal Friday.

The GLVC Tournament championship game is set for 1 p.m. (EST) next Sunday.
