HIGHLAND HEIGHTS,
Ky. - Northern Kentucky University head coach Dave Bezold announced
Wednesday that transfer student DeAaron Williams has joined the
Norse basketball program and will be in uniform tonight against
Indiana-East.
Williams, a
6-foot-5, 195-pound forward, is a native of Peoria, Ill. He played
at Illinois Central College last season and averaged 16.5 points
per game. Williams also pulled down 5.4 rebounds per game and shot
48.5 percent from the field as Illinois Central posted a 29-3 record.
“DeAaron
is an unbelievable athlete who can help us right now,” Bezold
said. “He can defend and rebound, and his leaping ability
and dunks are going to remind our fans of Steven Wright. He is a
different kind of player than Steven, but DeAaron has a chance to
make an impact in our conference. And he will definitely entertain
the fans with his dunks, I guarantee that.”
Williams, an
all-state player in Illinois while at Limestone Community High School,
was the Illinois slam dunk champion his senior year. He signed a
national letter of intent with the University of Wisconsin. He played
for the Badgers and head coach Bo Ryan in 2005-06, averaging 3.3
ppg in eight games before leaving the team.
Williams averaged
18.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists as a senior in high school
and was nominee for Illinois’ Mr. Basketball Award. He graduated
as Limestone’s career leader in points (1,868) and rebounds
(860).
Williams led
Limestone to a 27-2 record as a junior, including a win over current
NBA standout Shaun Livingston’s Peoria Central team. He was
named second team Associated Press all-state as a junior, joining
Livingston as the only juniors on either of the first two teams.
He was also four-time first-team all-conference selection and is
one of only three players in history to be named to the Peoria Journal
Star’s Class AA first-team three times.
An outstanding
leaper, Williams won the IHSA Class AA King of the Hill slam-dunk
contest and high-jumped 6-9 as a senior as a track & field standout.
