HIGHLAND HEIGHTS,
Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University men’s basketball team
has been picked to finish second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference
East preseason poll, the league announced Thursday.
The new-look
GLVC will be split into two seven-team divisions in 2005-06, with
NKU competing in the GLVC East. The Norse will be joined in the
GLVC East by Bellarmine, Saint Joseph’s, Lewis, Wisconsin-Parkside,
Indianapolis and Kentucky Wesleyan.
Saint Joseph’s
was tabbed the preseason favorite in the GLVC East by the coaches.
The Pumas received six first-place votes and 36 total points.
NKU, which
advanced to the championship game of the GLVC Tournament last season,
received one first-place vote and 26 total points. Kentucky Wesleyan
(25 points), Bellarmine (21 points) and Wisconsin-Parkside (16 points)
round out the top five in the GLVC East.
Southern Indiana
is picked to win the GLVC West, while Southern Illinois at Edwardsville
is second in that poll.
NKU must replace
leading scorer Mike Kelsey (16.0 points per game) and four other
starters this season. The top returning player is 6-foot-4 junior
forward Kevin Reinhardt, who averaged 8.4 ppg last season as the
Norse posted a 14-15 record.
Sophomore forward
Harrison Morton averaged 7.9 ppg and returns for the Norse. Junior
guard/forward Kevin Schappell averaged 3.3 ppg and is also back
in 2005-06.
NKU will play exhibition
games against Xavier (Nov. 5) and Cincinnati (Nov. 12) before beginning
the regular season against NCAA Division II powerhouse Findlay in
the John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic on Nov. 18.
Findlay, a member of
the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, advanced to
the NCAA Division II Elite Eight last season.
