HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University men’s basketball team has been picked to finish second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East preseason poll, the league announced Thursday.

The new-look GLVC will be split into two seven-team divisions in 2005-06, with NKU competing in the GLVC East. The Norse will be joined in the GLVC East by Bellarmine, Saint Joseph’s, Lewis, Wisconsin-Parkside, Indianapolis and Kentucky Wesleyan.

Saint Joseph’s was tabbed the preseason favorite in the GLVC East by the coaches. The Pumas received six first-place votes and 36 total points.

NKU, which advanced to the championship game of the GLVC Tournament last season, received one first-place vote and 26 total points. Kentucky Wesleyan (25 points), Bellarmine (21 points) and Wisconsin-Parkside (16 points) round out the top five in the GLVC East.

Southern Indiana is picked to win the GLVC West, while Southern Illinois at Edwardsville is second in that poll.

NKU must replace leading scorer Mike Kelsey (16.0 points per game) and four other starters this season. The top returning player is 6-foot-4 junior forward Kevin Reinhardt, who averaged 8.4 ppg last season as the Norse posted a 14-15 record.

Sophomore forward Harrison Morton averaged 7.9 ppg and returns for the Norse. Junior guard/forward Kevin Schappell averaged 3.3 ppg and is also back in 2005-06.

NKU will play exhibition games against Xavier (Nov. 5) and Cincinnati (Nov. 12) before beginning the regular season against NCAA Division II powerhouse Findlay in the John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic on Nov. 18.

Findlay, a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight last season.
