HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University’s Kevin Schappell has been named Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in men’s basketball.

Schappell, a 6-foot-3 junior guard/forward and a graduate of Loveland High School, averaged 20 points per game and shot 56.5 percent from the field as the Norse swept GLVC rivals Rockhurst and Drury over the weekend. He also averaged 3.5 steals in those two victories.

Schappell began the week by scoring 16 points, grabbing six rebounds and recording four steals in the Norse’s 58-55 win over Rockhurst. He also hit four clutch free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.

Schappell then scored a career-high 24 points on Saturday as NKU remained unbeaten (5-0) with a 64-46 win over Drury. In that game, Schappell hit five 3-point shots and added three steals. He scored 16 of his points in the first half as NKU built a 19-point lead.

Schappell leads NKU in scoring at 15.4 ppg, and he is shooting 63.2 percent from both the field and 3-point range. He has also converted 85 percent of his free throws.

NKU will play at Indianapolis in a GLVC game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
