NKU vs. Indianapolis (March 3, 2005)

Head Coach Dave Bezold

On stopping David Logan…

“We tried to slow him down.  We stopped him and he still scored 24 points.  The only way we could be successful is if the offense was methodical, slow and patient, and it prevented Indianapolis from having so many possessions which their offense feeds on.”

On the play of Pat Cary
“Pat Cary was the only mismatch we had on the floor because of their quickness on the perimeter and the way they play defense and switch everything so well.”

On the last couple of possession
“To Steve Purdon’s credit, we didn’t panic and talked about every scenario in that last timeout that was going to happen.  Regardless, it was going to be a one possession game and we couldn’t panic but let the play develop.”

On the winning basket
“We had a play called there and we said if it breaks down to understand the game situation.  If we were down one or two, to take it to the hole and see if we could create something.  If we were down three, we would obviously have to take a three.  He took the ball in and we were fortunate enough that he got a layup.”

Steve Purdon

On the winning layup
“The play was drawn up so that I was kind of the decoy to pull the defense to one side.  Walt (Mike Kelsey) was going to come off a double screen at the top of the key.  Our men had been switching all night and I got wide open because of a miscommunication and they both followed Walt which left me open.  When Sean threw me the ball, I did have an open look for the three but we were only down one.  Barnes had been blocking a lot of shots from coming out of the lane.  Kelsey and I talked about it and we thought that if he came out we were going to pump fake and drive to the basket.  That’s what happened, and I drove to the basket.”

On the play of Pat Cary
“We knew we wanted to slow down the pace and we knew that Pat had a mismatch on the inside.  The whole time we wanted to get the ball to him so that he could make a play.”

On the defense
“David Logan has been a major problem for us the past two years.  You have to give coach Bezold all the credit in the world because he came up with a great game plan that we executed.”

Pat Cary

On the defense
“I thought we did real well on David Logan tonight.  We slowed the game down, which is what we wanted to do.  And 24 points, I guess that’s slowing him down.  For a player like Logan that’s good.  We shut down every one else for Indianapolis except for Barnes who had 17.”
