LOUISVILLE,
Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University baseball team suffered
a setback on Saturday after being swept by Bellarmine in a Great
Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.
The Norse gave
up 10 runs in the first two innings of Game 1 and fought back
valiantly, scoring one in the third on a Jake Shaffer sacrifice
fly and five in the fifth on doubles from Shaffer and Evan McDole
and a two-run single from Larry Pempek, but Bellarmine held on
for the 11-6 decision.
Pat Muth went
3-for-4 to lead the Norse offense, while Shaffer was 1-for-3
with three RBIs. Ryan Schmidt (6-1) took the loss, going just
1 2/3 innings and giving up nine runs, eight of them earned.
Andy Heston pitched five innings of relief, giving up no earned
runs, while Kevin Jordan closed out the final 1 1/3 innings.
Bellarmine
cracked open the scorebook with two runs in the third and five
more in the fourth to cruise to an 8-0 win in the nightcap. Derek
Mattingly (6-2) got the shutout for the Knights, striking out
two while scattering just five hits.
Brandon Slusher
(3-2) took the loss, giving up seven runs on six hits in 3 1/3
innings. Cameron Betourne made his first appearance in almost
six weeks, walking two batters before being relieved.
The Norse
(24-17, 15-6 GLVC) will look to snap their three-game slide
on Sunday as they conclude their four-game series with Bellarmine.
First pitch is scheduled for noon.
