FLORENCE, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team, with the help of a masterful pitching performance from freshman Dave Middendorf, defeated the University of Indianapolis by a score of 6-0 to salvage a doubleheader split and to win the weekend series over the Greyhounds.

Middendorf, a graduate of LaSalle High School, hurled a complete game 9-inning one hit shutout to improve his record to 4-3. The 6-4 left-hander pitched ahead in the count all afternoon and allowed just two walks and one hit to shut down a Greyhound squad that pounded out 13 hits in Game 1 of the day.

Evan McDole got the Norse (24-14; 15-4 GLVC) on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo bomb – his third blast of the season - over the right-field fence off of UIndy (23-16; 10-10 GLVC) starter Mike McFadden (1-2). McDole would score the second run of the game in the 7th inning on a Cory Rupert balk.

The Norse plate three more runs in the bottom the 7th on two hits and an error. NKU then added another insurance run in the 8th on Kevin Dusold’s RBI double that plated Pat Muth, who had doubled to lead off the inning.

Game 1 saw the Greyhounds pound out runs in five of the seven innings played en route to an 8-2 victory.

UIndy jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over the Norse but NKU was able to bring a couple runs across the dish in the bottom of the second on a Jason Cisper groundout to score McDole and a throwing error on a double steal to score Larry Pempek.

NKU starter Erik Braeckel struggled with his control but allowed only one walk but seemed to never be able to consistently get ahead in the count. Braeckel (2-3) pitched just two innings allowing five hits and four runs, all of which were earned.

Greyhound starter Andrew Werner allowed just two runs – only one earned – on four hits to improve his record to 4-4 on the season.

The loss snapped a pair of streaks for the Norse, as the Greyhounds ended a 12-game winning streak for NKU. Also, Jack Ambrose went 0-for-4 in Game 1, halting a 14-game hitting streak for the junior.

NKU will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Evansville, Ind. for a single game, non-conference tussle with the University of Southern Indiana. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. EDT.

The Norse will then travel to Louisville, Ky., to face off with in-state rival Bellarmine on April 19-20 for a huge 4-game weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for noon each day.
