FLORENCE, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University's Matt Marksbury must really enjoy receiving the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week honor.

Just five days after receiving that weekly recognition, Marksbury took the mound Saturday and hurled a 2-0 shutout against Southern Indiana in the first game of a doubleheader at Champion Window Field. The 6-foot-2 senior right-hander scatted four hits and struck out five batters en route to the complete-game victory.

Marksbury, a graduate of Norwood High School, improved to 3-0 this season. He walked just one batter and picked up the seven-inning victory with a total of 97 pitches.

In the process, Marksbury might have also earned a repeat of the GLVC's weekly honor when it is announced Monday.

Jake Shaffer's run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth inning snapped a scoreless tie and plated Kenny Wilson with the winning run. Kevin Dusold later added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to drive in Shaffer.

In the nightcap, Southern Indiana scored six times in the fifth inning and gained a split with a 9-2 victory over NKU. The Screaming Eagles were paced by Darin Mastroianni's 4-for-5 performance at the plate in the second game. Mastroianni also added two RBI in the win.

NKU is 4-12 overall, 3-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Southern Indiana is 12-6, 3-3 GLVC.

The two teams will wrap up their three-game series at noon Sunday.
